Speed in two different versions has just been the subject of a trial at the UK’s Millbrook Proving Ground. Allying speed of cars and speed of data transmission, the AutoAir consortium, using 5G technology, undertook a test to transmit data to fast-moving vehicles at speeds of 1Gbps.

The trial was designed to demonstrate the UK’s independent 5G-enabled infrastructure for connected and autonomous vehicles. The fast-moving cars on the circuit also streamed live 4K video back to a screen on a bus carrying guests.

This high-speed data transmission will be critical in enabling future generations of autonomous vehicles to understand and instantly react to the data they receive on the constantly changing traffic and road situations around them. This capability will determine both the operability of autonomous cars, and their safety.
